On Boylston Highway since 1998
Mills River has changed a lot since we opened. We're still here, still privately owned, still with somebody in the office.
Mills River Storage Center is an independently owned self storage facility in Mills River, North Carolina, held by the same local family since it opened in 1998. It is not affiliated with any national or regional storage chain. Gloria has run the front desk since the day it opened, some tenants have rented continuously since 1998, and tenants have 24-hour gate access every day of the year.
When this facility opened in 1998, Mills River wasn't a town yet — it incorporated five years later, in 2003. Boylston Highway carried a lot less traffic. There was no brewery down the road, and the airport was a fraction of what it is now.
The family behind it comes out of Brevard, one county over. The owner's parents worked at the Ecusta paper mill in Pisgah Forest.
We've watched the whole thing happen from the same lot. We've stored the contents of houses being built, houses being sold, and houses that flooded. We've held onto a lot of boats through a lot of winters. And a few of the tenants who rented in 1998 are still here — same gate, same units, twenty-eight years running.
What being privately owned actually changes
Ownership determines who makes the decisions. Here, the person you're talking to is the person who can make one — an exception, a judgment call, or just an answer today happens at the front desk.
We answer to the people who store here, because they're the same people we run into at Ingles. That's not a marketing line — it's just what happens when the owner lives twenty minutes away instead of five states away.
The manager on site
Our office is staffed weekdays by Gloria, who has run the front desk since 1998 — the same year the gate first opened. She knows the property, the tenants, and which unit is going to fit your load. If you read our Google reviews, you will find her mentioned by name more than once.
She is who you talk to. If your gate code doesn't work, you talk to the person who can fix it. If you need to drop off a check, there's someone to hand it to. If you're not sure whether your stuff fits in a 10×10, you get an answer from someone who has watched a thousand move-ins into these exact units.
Contractors
Some of our tenants are contractors who keep tools and materials here and come through the gate most mornings to load up for the day. That's the practical case for 24-hour access: a gate that opens at six is no use if your day starts at five.
What we're good at
- Being open when you need in. 24-hour access, every day, no exceptions for holidays.
- Straight pricing. No admin fees, no required insurance, no scheduled rate increases, no deposit. Second month free, month to month.
- Big loads. Wide aisles and outdoor space for boats, campers and trailers.
- Being reachable. The phone rings in the Mills River office. You can also text us at (828) 553-4739.
- Staying put. Here since 1998 — that's the whole pitch. We'll be here when you need the unit again.
